The top ranked Owens Community College women's volleyball team won their second straight NJCAA Region XII Division III volleyball championship on Saturday. The Express, who are 36-4 overall, defeated both Schoolcraft College and number three Columbus State Community College on the way to the title.
In the first match, second seeded Columbus State CC defeated the third seed, Lorain Community College, 25-16, 28-26, 25-14 to advance to the final. The Cougars were led by Bobby Diamond with 19 kills, four digs, two service aces and a block assist. Tiziana Russell had ten kills, four block assists, two digs and a set assist, while Aubrey Jenkins had 34 set assists, 12 digs, three kills and an ace. Tate Rybarczyk had 12 digs and an ace. Lorain County was led by Vanecia Billings, with seven kills and two digs, while Maddie Markovich had five kills and 10 digs.
In the second semi-final, Owens dispatched Schoolcraft College in three sets by scores of 25-8, 25-4, 25-10. The Express were led by Tyriana Settles with 11 kills, six digs and an ace, while Samira Neely eight kills, five block assists and three aces. Arielle Snider had six kills. Schoolcraft was led by Daija Anderson with one kill and four digs. The win was Owens head coach his 700th win at Owens in his 19th season.
In the Championship, Owens defeated Columbus State by scores 25-23, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17. The Express were lead by Setteles with 26 kills, 22 digs and one block solo, while Neely had 11 kills, four digs and three block assist. Rebecca Brown had 60 set assists and three digs, while Olivia Materni had 16 digs. The Cougars were paced by Diamond with 18 kills, 12 digs, three block solos and three block assists. Russell added 11 kills, one block solo and two block assists. Rybarczyk had 31 kills and Audrey Jenkins had 45 assists.
Both teams will know advance to the NJCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic A and B District Tournament at Sandhills CC in Pinehurst, NC.
