Columbus State women's basketball wins the NJCAA Region XII Division III Championship

The Columbus State Community College women's basketball team won the NJCAA Region XII Division III Women's Basketball Championship with a 52-50 win over Owens Community College. The Cougars, who are 17-6 on the season, are ranked 14th in the last week's NJCAA Division III women's basketball poll.

Columbus State lead 17-1 after the first quarter, but trailed the Express 29-24 at the half. Columbus State took a 37-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. The score bounced back and forth the whole fourth quarter. Owens took a 50-49 lead with 27 seconds left, when Tori Kopp hit a lay up off and assist by Allison Finch. With 14 seconds left, the Cougars Saraysia Nelson hit a layup and was fouled. She made the free throw to put the Cougars up 51-50. With seven seconds left Haylee Thomas-Speigle stole the ball from Kopp and was fouled. Thomas-Speigle miss both free throws but Melia Walder grabbed the offensive rebound. She was fouled by Kopp. Walder split the free throws to give the Cougars the win. 

Columbus State was lead by Walder with 19 points and ten rebounds, while Nelson added 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Anjalee Keyy had 12 rebounds and 14 blocks. Miackale Bates added seven points and four assists. 

Owens CC was lead by Whitney Thames with 17 points, 19 rebounds and four steals, while Shyah Wheeler had ten points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Kopp have ten points four rebounds. The Express finish the season with a 10-14 record. 

Columbus State CC will advances to the NJCAA Division III Great Lakes District Championship Game on Saturday, February 29 at either Rock Valley (IL) College or Madison (WI) College.
